Some days, this job make us laugh out loud at the sheer range of what we do. One minute it’s chocolate bars, garbage bins, posters, phone calls, and a dozen moving parts… and the next, we’re visiting a farm in Cornwall, choosing the perfect holiday tree for Triangle Park. Today was one of those days that captures Middlebury at its best.

We began the morning at the Franklins’ beautiful farm—8.00am sharp. Their generosity continues to anchor this Middlebury tradition, and this year’s tree is an extra special one…20 feet we estimate! A full crew from Middlebury Public Works arrived—bright & breezy, and the ease with which they work together is impressive. Capable & all hands in sync…and yes… I was given the absolute thrill of calling “TIMBER!” as it came down. A simple joy, but deeply satisfying to this townie heart, ha ha! From there, the morning unfolded with the kind of coordinated efficiency that is a impressive to witness.

By 8:55am, the tree was standing tall in Triangle Park. Not even an hour. No drama, no fuss—just true professionalism and community spirit at work. Later this week, the crew will return with lights in anticipation of Very Merry Middlebury and our Tree Lighting on December 4th at 6pm. This morning was a reminder of why this work matters: it’s varied, surprising, sometimes muddy, often magical, and always powered by people who care. From the Franklins’ kindness, to the public works team’s precision, to the coordination behind the scenes—it’s all a reflection of what makes Middlebury shine. Here’s to the season ahead. Here’s to community. And here’s to calling “TIMBER!” before most people’s coffee had even kicked in. Very Merry Middlebury begins now! 🎄✨
