There is a moment every year when it feels like Middlebury collectively exhales. The coats disappear
(thank goodness!) Doors open. Music drifts across Triangle Park. Friends stop to chat on Main Street. Visitors linger a little longer. And suddenly, after months of planning, dreaming, organizing, and waiting, summer is here.
As we walk around downtown these days, what strikes us isn’t any single event. It’s the connections.
A concert leads someone into a gallery they’ve never visited before. A First Friday brings old friends together and introduces new ones. A family comes downtown for creemies and ends up staying for music. A visitor discovers a local business and returns again and again. One thing leads to another, and before you know it, a community begins creating momentum of its own.
June has already brought so much energy to town. First Fridays are in full swing; Town Hall Theater’s program is bursting with energy, The Henry Sheldon is open with six exciting new exhibits, Downtown restaurants and shops are extending hours, patios are filling up, and every week seems to offer another reason to come to town.
And the best part? We’re just getting started. Behind all of these events are the people who quietly making things happen. Summer in Middlebury is not created by any one organization. It is built through partnerships, collaboration, generosity, and a shared belief that community matters. That may be what we’re most grateful for this season. A few years ago, many of these events existed independently. Today they increasingly support one another. Visitors come for a concert and discover the museum. Someone attending an event at the Town Hall Theater comes into town early to wander from store to gallery to creemie spot! An independent store owner partners with a local Inn Keeper and alchemy happens. A vineyard approaches a coffee shop, and a special magic occurs. A market visitor becomes a regular downtown customer. These connections matter.
Summer in Middlebury isn’t a single event. It’s a season-long invitation to participate, explore, support local businesses, connect with neighbors, and enjoy the place we are fortunate enough to call home.
