This month, our student reporter Spencer Copeland— a Middlebury Union High School journalist and founder of Local Trove—sits down with Erin Brennan, owner of Middleton, to talk shop, style, and the heart behind this stylish boutique. From curating pieces that feel like “instant favorites” to building community one conversation at a time, Erin shares how Middleton has grown into a go-to stop for locals and visitors alike.
Meet the Owner of Middleton – Erin Brennan, by Spencer Copeland Erin never set out with a long plan to own a boutique. What she calls a happy accident came from years of experience in retail and a deep passion for small business. After managing and buying for other stores, the chance to become an owner partner at Middleton Clothing arrived in 2025 through her relationship with the original founders. For Erin, it was the right moment to step forward and bring her own vision to the downtown shop.
Middleton Clothing is more than a place to buy clothes. Erin describes it as having the personality of a cool, funky aunt, the kind who shows up dressed to perfection and brings energy into any room. That spirit shows in the carefully chosen collections, which balance Vermont’s relaxed lifestyle with the need for more polished outfits during special occasions. Whether it is a cozy sweater for fall, an everyday staple for work, or something unique for a wedding, the boutique offers variety without losing its intimate feel.
Behind the scenes, Erin spends countless hours curating collections, planning inventory, and managing the day to day details of ownership. She laughs that her brain never fully switches off from the store, with new ideas coming even during ordinary moments. This dedication helps keep Middleton Clothing fresh, with new arrivals showing up daily and each season bringing its own character.
Middlebury has given the boutique a special community to grow in. The shop attracts not only locals but also visitors from nearby towns, families touring Middlebury College, and travelers passing through. Erin hopes that every person who steps inside leaves with something memorable, whether it is a new piece of clothing that becomes a favorite or simply the feeling of a warm and welcoming experience.
With Middleton Clothing, Erin has taken up the torch of a vision started by others while making it her own. The store thrives on personality, community, and care, qualities that make it a distinctive part of downtown Middlebury and a place people look forward to returning to again and again.
