There’s something particularly exciting about watching a new piece of creativity find its home in downtown Middlebury.
This morning, artist Matt Heywood began installing his beautiful new artwork in Bakery Lane, and Kelly and I couldn’t be more delighted to see it coming to life. Inspired by Vermont’s landscape and agricultural heritage, the sweeping sheaves of wheat feel completely at home here — and we especially love the way their rolling forms seem to echo the movement of the Otter Creek waterfall just around the corner. It feels like a wonderful new placemaker for Bakery Lane.
As ever, projects like this are very much a town effort. Huge thanks to Matt Cram from Public Works for helping us close the road this morning, to the Silver Maple team for setting up the scaffolding and assisting with the installation, to the DIDC for funding the project, and to the Middlebury Selectboard for its approval and support.
We’re so excited to have yet another beautiful piece of Matt Heywood’s work in downtown Middlebury — adding color, character and a little unexpected joy to a corner of town. We absolutely love it, and we can’t wait for everyone to see the finished piece!
