A few long strokes of blue paint can tell a big story. The new asphalt art at Mill Street isn’t only decorative—it’s a testament to what happens when a need to highlight a little known set of steps and a slightly secret parking spot arises…in Middlebury, when faced with such a challenge, heads come together to plan and plot!

With a playful and effective design by David Hoehenschau and Claire Tebbs, ( a big thank you!) and brought to life by the Middlebury Public Works crew led by Matt Cram, the Frog Hollow/Mill St parking lot has become a vibrant pathway overnight. This playful image guides walkers towards the College St staircase and Shiretown, and has created a fresh new way to explore downtown!

This project reflects Middlebury’s spirit: a town with the love of beauty and a mission for beautification at its heart, plus a town team with a shared vision for what’s possible. It took imagination, collaboration, and a collective will to turn an everyday space into something both joyful and useful.
Where there’s vision and teamwork, even asphalt can become art—and a community can make magic happen.
