There’s something really special happening in Middlebury… and it’s building, month by month.

First Fridays are back on May 1st, and what started as a hopeful idea—to keep our downtown open a little later, a little brighter, a little more connected—is quickly becoming something bigger. Each month, more of our retailers, galleries, and restaurants are joining in, opening their doors, trying something new, and helping to shape what we hope will become a true Middlebury tradition.

First and foremost, a huge thank you. To every business saying “yes,” staying open that bit later, hosting something creative, or simply welcoming people in—this only works because of you. It takes energy, effort, and optimism, and we don’t take that lightly.

And for May, there’s a lot to look forward to.

We’re especially excited to welcome some new experiences into the mix. Little Seed is hosting an “Adult Recess” from 5–8pm, with wine from Lincoln Peak Vineyard and delicious snacks—an invitation to unwind, linger, and enjoy. Over at Toad Hall Flowers, there’ll be a flower pot planting bar (weather permitting), where you can create something beautiful to take home—bring your own pot or use one of theirs.

As always, the heart of First Fridays is in the wandering. Pop into Flora for $5 drinks and specials, browse late at The Stone Mill, and enjoy a Southern BBQ pop-up at Shiretown Marketplace.

At PhotoPlace Gallery, their new exhibition Element of Change opens alongside Golden Rule Mead tastings, while Town Hall Theater brings the energy with Jean’s Place Bar and performances of Nunsense and Eureka Day.

Food, drink, and a little fun are never far away—think karaoke and a pasta pop-up at Haymaker Bun Company, cocktails at Crooked Ladle, and plenty of options from American Flatbread, Sabai Sabai, Taste of India, Two Brothers Tavern and more.

Shops are opening late and ready to welcome you—The Vermont Book Shop, The Middlebury Shop, Danforth Pewter, Tinker & Smithy, Cobweb Antiques and many more. And for a sweet treat, don’t miss Vermont Cookie Love—they’re offering one free chocolate chip cookie with every purchase for First Friday (which feels like reason enough to come out, if we’re honest).

The joy of First Fridays is simple: it’s about being out together. Running into friends, meeting new people, popping into places you haven’t visited in a while, and rediscovering what makes this town tick.

So come out. Wander a little. Stay a little longer.
And if you haven’t joined in yet—whether you’re a business or a visitor—there’s always room.

We’re just getting started. 💛
