As part of our highlight on Middlebury Stores, our student reporter, Spencer Copeland, founder of Local Trove—sat down with Dan Mcintosh to reflect on the backgroud of the iconic store, The Middlebury Shop.
The Middlebury Shop has been part of downtown since 1983, when three friends opened Middlebury’s first sporting goods store. At first it operated as Sport About a national franchise, but when the national chain went under, the founders turned a challenge into opportunity. They rebranded, building something with its own identity and a strong local connection.
For a stretch of time, under the ownership and management of David Disque (one of the original owners), the store went by the name “Forth N’ Goal Sport,” a clever play on words that meant “Go Forth Toward Your Goal.” As Dan McIntosh recalls with a smile, it seemed inspiring at first but quickly became a hassle to explain over the phone. The name eventually gave way to the simpler, lasting title of The Middlebury Shop, which has since become a cornerstone of the downtown community.
In the early days, shelves were stocked with hockey sticks, lacrosse gear, and baseball equipment. Over time, as the town’s needs shifted, the store evolved into something more enduring. Today, visitors and locals alike browse Vermont and Middlebury themed apparel, unique gifts, and items that reflect the charm and pride of the town.
At the heart of it all are co-owners Dan and David. Dan grew up in Middlebury and has spent decades shaping the shop into what it is today. A lifelong resident, he is known not just for his business but for his ties to community and local history. For Dan and David, running the shop has always been about more than selling products. It is about welcoming people, creating memories, and carrying forward a tradition of authenticity and warmth.
