There are moments in this role when I’m reminded why I love it so much.
Last night was one of them.
I was invited inside — into the rehearsal room of the Bobolinks, one of Middlebury College’s extraordinary a cappella groups. Naomi, Morgan, Tony, Rey, Amiya, Lucy, Alexandria, Anaya, George, Harry, (Owen and Regan we unable to make last night) — generous, focused, funny, and fiercely talented.
To sit quietly and watch their process was a privilege. The listening. The micro-adjustments. The layered communication without ego. The careful building of multi-part harmony — breath by breath, phrase by phrase. It’s a kind of architecture, really. Sound scaffolding rising into something effortless and soaring.
There is such depth of talent on the hill at Middlebury College. Being on the inside — even briefly — reminds me how much creative energy hums just above downtown.
We’re working on sustainable ways to better connect this highly skilled, imaginative community with the town below. And some of those ideas will begin to hatch next week. Read about First Fridays here, courtesy of the Middlebury Campus newspaper.
