For the record I think all babies are beautiful. There are times, however, within the world of innovation-based economic development when someone shows their baby to you and you actually wince or have to turn away. Figuratively, their invention or world-changing idea or golden ticket is simply not as attractive as they think it is. Often, someone else some place else has already had the exact same “eureka” moment and has already created something very similar to this entrepreneur’s baby. Or, on occasion, a business model around a similar product or service simply didn’t pan out. The market was not substantiated, or the competition was underestimated or something simply didn’t go according to plan. For someone who might have worked for years on making their baby as beautiful as possible it can be devastating news and they may simply not respect a professional opinion or ten similar professional opinions. For others, it’s back to the drawing board or a pivot in a different direction.
