For the past 36 years, Middlebury’s town green has hosted the Festival on the Green — a weeklong summer music festival that is free and open to the community. The Festival on the Green has been acclaimed by Vermont Life as “the best series of free performances in Vermont” and as Vermont’s “Favorite Festival.”
A much anticipated highlight of the summer, the Festival has remained faithful to its mission of bringing top-quality, free, family-friendly entertainment to the residents and guests of Addison County since its debut at the end of the nineteen-seventies. Over the years, we have introduced more than 445 performance artists or groups to collectively more than 125,000 audience members. The roster of “alumni” performers includes homegrown talent from the Green Mountain State and entertainers from half-a-world away, solo artists and entire parades, traditional entertainers and those who’ve earned a reputation as “cutting-edge.” Several Alumni are Grammy Nominees.
The festival includes lunchtime children’s performaces each day and many local childcare centers will regularly attend these special sessions. As the sun begins to go down, the Green fills with picnicers on blankets who are treated to hours a wonderful music.
Members of the media and of festival attendees have graciously complimented the event:
“Small town, big fun!”
“One of the best community-oriented music festivals imaginable.”
“A gift to the entire community.”
“Middlebury at its finest.”
“Excellent quality and variety of performers.”
“Love it all — what a treat!”
“The Festival on-the-Green is the very essence of New England in summer. A blanket tossed on the grass, free music, good ice cream, friendly neighbors’ faces and children dancing in the shadows of the gazebo. This is the America we have mostly left behind, and to which we keep trying to return.”
